The Tri-Colored Heron is found in the gulf states of the U.S. and in Mexico and South America.
This species nests in colonies, usually with other herons. They create platforms of sticks in trees or shrubs and typically lay 3-7 eggs.
The Tri-Colored Heron is about 22 inches long. Adults have a blue-grey head, back, neck and underwings and a white line down the inside of the neck. They have long blue plumes on their head and neck and buff colored plumes on their back. Their long legs are yellow. They are a striking heron.
The Tri-Colored Heron hunts in shallow or deeper water. It stalks fish, crustaceans, reptiles and insects.
