The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center needs volunteers. This is our current list of volunteer jobs and skills needed. If you can help us with any of these volunteer duties contact us!

Information Desk
Responsibilities include welcoming visitors and answering questions. Skills required; personable & knowledgeable about South Padre Island flora, fauna, other attractions & places to stay and eat. Master naturalist desirable.

Gift Shop Clerk
Responsibilities include: man cash register in Gift Shop.  The best volunteer would be personable and friendly with excellent salesmanship. Knowledge of birding and natural history of SPI preferred.

Gift Shop Manager
Responsibilities include: Keep GS personnel trained in merchandise and cash register op, keep shop stocked, and keep track of inventory and cost of goods. Skills preferred are: personable, pays attention to detial, previous retail experience preferably in management, ability to get good deals from vendors.

Interpretation (inside)
Responsibilities include delivering the message of SPI BNC mission. The best volunteer will be personable and knowledgeable about South Padre Island: flora, fauna; Master Naturalist desirable.

Interpretation (outside on boardwalks)
Responsibilities include delivering the message of SPI BNC mission. The best volunteer will be personable and knowledgeable about South Padre Island: flora, fauna; Master Naturalist desirable.

Bilingual Interpreter
Responsibilities include delivering the message of SPI BNC mission in Spanish (Hebrew, French, German, etc.) Volunteer must be fluent in spanish and other languages.

Educational Development
Responsibilities include developing educational programs & tours. Skills required are a background in teaching with an emphasis in science and natural history.

Tour Guides
Responsibilites include taking groups out and conducting tours. Skills required include public speaking, personable & knowledgeable about South Padre Island and its flora, fauna and other attractions. Master Naturalist desirable.

Social Media
Responsibilities include keeping the website, Facebook, Twitter, etc current and fresh. The best volunteer will have experience with websites, Facebook, Twitter; knowledge of servers, up to date with current technology.

Marketing
Responsibilities include increasing business and promoting center growth. Skills needed include a marketing background and experience, excellent people skills, enjoys talking with others and a great communicator.

Press Releases
Responsibilities include story submissions to various publications. Skills required include comprehensive writing.

Publicity
Responsibilities include developing a database and writing the newsletter. Skills required include prior newsletter writing experience.

Fundraiser
Responsibilities include helping raise money and awareness for the center. Skills necessary are fundraising experience, many social contacts and people skills.

Wetland maintenance
Responsibilities include managing cattail population and other wetland plant species. Skills needed are a knowledge of wetland plants and irradication methods. Volunteer would need a certification to apply herbicides.

Grounds maintenance
Responsibilities include keeping gardens weeded, ponds clean and Valley Land Fund sites clean and well-managed to best attract birds (cat-free). Necessary skills include good physical health to garden, weed and wade in water; knowlege of plants and ecosystems in order to best attract birds.

Grant Writer
Responsibilities include researching, writing and administer grants for SPI BNC. Skills needed are a knowledge of grant funding sources, good writing skills, and an ability to develop and manage budgets.
