Volunteer Job Descriptions

The South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center needs volunteers. This is our current list of volunteer jobs and skills needed. If you can help us with any of these volunteer duties contact us!
 

Information Desk
Responsibilities include welcoming visitors and answering questions. Skills required; personable & knowledgeable about South Padre Island flora, fauna, other attractions & places to stay and eat. Master naturalist desirable.


Gift Shop Clerk
Responsibilities include: man cash register in Gift Shop.  The best volunteer would be personable and friendly with excellent salesmanship. Knowledge of birding and natural history of SPI preferred.


Interpretation (inside)
Responsibilities include delivering the message of SPI BNC mission. The best volunteer will be personable and knowledgeable about South Padre Island: flora, fauna; Master Naturalist desirable.


Interpretation (outside on boardwalks)
Responsibilities include delivering the message of SPI BNC mission. The best volunteer will be personable and knowledgeable about South Padre Island: flora, fauna; Master Naturalist desirable.


Bilingual Interpreter
Responsibilities include delivering the message of SPI BNC mission in Spanish (Hebrew, French, German, etc.) Volunteer must be fluent in spanish and other languages.


Educational Development
Responsibilities include developing educational programs & tours. Skills required are a background in teaching with an emphasis in science and natural history.


Tour Guides
Responsibilites include taking groups out and conducting tours. Skills required include public speaking, personable & knowledgeable about South Padre Island and its flora, fauna and other attractions. Master Naturalist desirable.


Media
Responsibilities include keeping the website, databases, developing ads, educational and promotional videos, etc. The best volunteer will have experience with websites, Facebook, Twitter; knowledge of servers, up to date with current technology.

 

Fundraiser
Responsibilities include helping raise money and awareness for the center. Skills necessary are fundraising experience, many social contacts and people skills.

Garden Maintenance

Responsibilities include maintaining healthy gardens and habitats through the removal of undesirable plants and also upkeep of our seasonal bird feeders. Volunteer with good native plant identification skills are prefered. Master Naturalist desirable.

 

Animal Husbandry

Responsibilities include cleaning animal tanks and enclosures and helping staff with providing the optimal care for our kept educational animals. Volunteers that are confident working with reptiles are preferred.
