About the Event
Coastal Birding Camp
Bird activity and diversity really starts to pick up on the wetlands in late July as resident nesting birds return to our site from their nesting rookeries, and north breeding migratory shorebirds begint to migrate through our area. Campers will learn about the coastal birds of South Padre Island and their unique ecologies through fun field bird surveys and classroom presentations and activities. Loaned binoculars and field guides will be provided to campers throughout the camp.
Day one:
Campers will be citizen scientists/field biologist and learn about the Colonial Waterbirds of the area by conducting a bird survey for the Texas Audubon Society of the herons, egrets, terns, and gulls utilizing our wetlands. Data from the survey will then be used by the Audubon society to access the health of wetlands along the Gulf Coast. Survey will be followed by indoor classroom presentations and activities that will educate campers about coastal tides and wetland health that influences bird activity and habitat ecology.
Day two: Campers will need to be dropped off at tidal mudflats just .5 mile north of birding center, map will be provided.
Campers will learn about the wonder of shorebird migration as we expore the tidal mudflats along the Laguna Madre just north of the convention center. We will spend time learning how to identify these facinating birds and gather observations about their habitat and ecology. A canopy shade will be set up to keep out of the sun and establish a learning base. Water shoes should be worn by campers on this day. We will then walk back to the birding center as a group on the sidewalk.
Each camp session is limited to 10 campers between the ages of 9-12.
Most of the time will be spent outdoors, with some indoor instruction before and after activities.
Camp time is from 8:30am-1:30pm each day. Campers can be dropped off 15 minutes prior to start time.
Lunch will not be provided, campers need to bring a lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. Cold, purified drinking water will be available.
Covid-19 precautions:
Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, campers will have to wear masks while indoors and will be seated at appropriate distances from one another.
